Qian Zhang, PhD, is a researcher at the Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University, Sweden. Her research interests include migration, digital geography, political ecology, rural transformation, pastoralism, and environmental governance. Overall, she has been engaged in understanding migration from critical and nuanced theoretical stances, and in disentangling the intersection of migration with social, environmental, and political issues. Her publications cover the topics of digitalisation and migrants, migration intermediaries, resettlement as an environmental adaptation measure, impact of climate change on pastoral communities and agricultural transformation. Her research areas mainly focus on China and Sweden. She is experienced in combining qualitative and quantitative methods, and in interdisciplinary collaborations. Her award-winning monograph Pastoralists and the Environmental State: A Study of Ecological Resettlement in Inner Mongolia, China (2015) contributes new understanding on the meaning of power and the state in political ecology, nuanced knowledge on the relationship between migration, environmental change, and reflections on resettlement as a solution to environmental degradation.
