Elizabeth Fussell is a Professor of Population Studies and Environment and Society at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. I am affiliated with the Population Studies and Training Center, the Institute at Brown on Environment and Society, and the Sociology Department. I also serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Springer journal, Population & Environment.
My research focuses on environmental drivers of migration and social inequalities in migration, health, and other post-disaster outcomes. Most of my research has focused on the long-term effects of Hurricane Katrina on the residential mobility, health, and wellbeing of the residents of New Orleans. I have extended this research agenda in two directions. First, I am investigating the effects of hurricanes and other exogenous shocks on migration, in general, and on internal migration systems in the United States. Second, I have new projects that focus on the effects of environmental and economic shocks on Puerto Rico’s population. I am interested in data linkage and computational methods that allow investigation of population-environment interactions.
